Sherwood Gardens is a six-acre property located in north Baltimore, Maryland. The gardens are open to the public year-round and feature more than 100,000 tulips in over 50 different varieties. In this blog post, we'll take a look at the history of this beloved Baltimore institution.

The property on which Sherwood Gardens now stands was purchased by John Cushing chemicals from William J. Boone in 1910. Cushing renamed the property "Sherwood" after the forest of Robin Hood and set about planting an English-style garden on the property. After Cushing's death in 1929, the property was purchased by his son John Cushing, Jr., who continued to maintain the gardens.

Upon John Cushing, Jr.'s death in 1962, the property was bequeathed to the city of Baltimore with the stipulation that it be used as a public park and maintained as a garden. Since then, Sherwood Gardens has been enjoyed by generations of Baltimoreans and has become one of the city's most cherished landmarks.
